FEELING JUICY - THE BENEFITS OF FRESH JUICE

In 2001 a good friend of mine introduced me to juicing. He explained to me that the body has to use a lot of energy digesting food, where as with juices your body gets a rest from all the hard work, and all the nutrients go straight into your system.

I started off by buying a book on juicing called Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices, written by the juice guru Dr. Norman Walker. My main ailment was low energy so following the books instructions I drank 16oz of organic carrot juice everyday. Not only did I get more energy, but my eczema cleared up. Now I have found if I do not have carrot juice for over a week, my eczema comes back and my fatigue returns.

You might be saying to yourself “Well, I eat a lot of cooked vegetables with my meal so why should I consider juicing?” When you cook vegetables at temperatures above 114 degrees, heat destroys the enzymes. (Enzymes are naturally occurring chemical substances in the human body that help a chemical reaction take place). Enzymes aid the digestion and absorption of food in your body. Fruit and vegetable juices that are sold in a shop or supermarket are no good either as they must go through a pasteurising process before they can be sold to you the customer. The reason for this pasteurising process is to give these drinks shelf life. However during this process heat reaches about 120 degrees which destroys the enzymes. Raw vegetable or fruit drinks contain live enzymes, so you must drink it straight after juicing, or they will start dying. Also use a sieve to separate the liquid from the fibre.

Nutritionally if you ate one raw carrot, your body would only be able to absorb about 1% of the available vitamin A (beta carotene). That is because most of the nutrients in a carrot are locked in its fibre. However, if you separate the liquid from the fibre, your body would be able to assimilate 90% of the nutrients.

Tips For Juicing

Get a good quality juicer, the best is the Champion Juicer, but it is very expensive
Use organic produce whenever possible.
Wash the fruit and veg and cut into manageable pieces.
You can put most parts in the juicer, please include leaves, tops and outer skins such as celery and beet.
Drink as soon as possible.

The benefits of consuming these freshly made, health drinks are many. They aid in keeping organs such as heart, liver, and kidneys strong and healthy. They also help prevent colon cancer and keep your digestive system in tiptop shape. This is because they are a great supplier of protein, vitamins and minerals.

These drinks also boost the immune system and promote good-looking healthy skin.
Another health benefit to consuming these drinks is that they help you lose weight and lower cholesterol naturally.

Below are some common ailments with the juice recipes to help aid them.

COLDS - Carrot 8oz, celery 5oz, Radish 3oz

ACNE - Carrot 10oz, spinach 6oz

HAY FEVER - Carrot 10oz, Beet 3oz, Cucumber 3oz

INSOMNIA - Celery 10oz, carrot 6oz

RHEUMATISM - Lemon 16oz

PANIC ATTACKS- Apple 16oz

So forget all those multi-vitamins you keep popping everyday, get your nutrients the natural way.

EYEBROWS AT RED HAIR & BEAUTY SALON IN MARBELLA - IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ARCH!

Those of you who follow my beauty articles will know that I am slightly obsessed with my eyebrows (well they do grow in two different directions.) I only ever have them threaded and have always refused to have them done any other way. Until now!

Last week I was at a friends BBQ, when one of the girls turned up with the most amazing arched eyebrows. I immediately pounced. “Who does your eyebrows?” I demanded.

“ Oh, Laura at Red Hair & Beauty waxes them, she’s amazing,” she gushed. Then another of the girls walked in.

“ Oh my God, where did you get your eyebrows done,” I shrieked. Yes, you guessed it, Laura at Red Hair & Beauty. When another one turned up with fab arches, I just retreated to the sofa and sulked. I am a beauty writer, how was I the last to learn about this therapist?

The next day I booked an appointment at Red Hair & Beauty. Laura took one look at my eyebrows and asked me why on earth I was bleaching them. I told her that I hated looking like a blatant dyed blondie with dark eyebrows. It is such a give away that you are not ‘au natural‘. Yes, I know I am strange and probably the only person you will ever meet that gets ‘roots’ on their eyebrows. She cleansed my eye area and then started to wax. Being a wax virgin I was very nervous. Ten minutes later and well … I love them. They are just as good as threaded brows and lets just say I have already booked my next months appointment.

EYEBROW THREADING LONDON

Nita's Amazing Arches

From now on everything that I recommend in Marbella I will try and write about the London equivalent. The threading Queen is Nita Thanki. She can transform your whole look and even knock ten years off by just shaping your brows. I always think that you should look at your therapist to judge the quality of their treatments. If they have amazing skin, then book in a facial. Nita has the most incredible eyebrows. She always moans at me when I ask her to shape mine like hers. “Everyone asks me that,” is always her reply.

If you cannot get down to North London then The Blink Bar in Selfridges is the next best thing.

Ocean Club Opening

Yes I know this is late, but I just wanted to put up a photo of Laura Shelley's amazing body painting. As for the opening itself - note to organisers. There is no point spending so much money on entertainment if everybody is freezing their butts off. Most people left by 11pm and went to TIBV as it was like the North Pole.

If you want all those gorgeous women to stay there all night in very little clothing, invest in wind breakers and patio heaters!!!! Rant over.

Let's Face It - The Top Facialist In Marbella

When I first moved to Marbella I knew I had to get my priorities in order. Forget finding a house I needed to find THE BEST health and beauty therapists here. The stress of moving had caused havoc on my skin. My outbreak was more pre-pubescent teenager than Marbella socialite. A facial was a must, but could I find a decent therapist?

I admit it, I am very fussy when it comes to facials. I want it all, pampering, massage, thorough extraction with the final result of extremely clean, plumped up skin. That’s not too much to ask, is it? It took me three years of searching for a fabulous facialist, before I finally found her, Cecilia Gillitzer! She has 13 years of experience, specialises in facials and semi-permanent makeup and is reasonably priced.

I was a bit dubious when I found out she worked from home, but I promise you there were no screaming kids or ringing phones . The therapy room is pure white, with a relaxing feel. Cecilia thoroughly examined my skin before deciding the Dermologica range suited me. She also works with Environ, a range which was developed by a South African plastic surgeon and contains natural Vitamin C, Vitamin A and antioxidants.

I started to drift off as she cleansed and massaged my skin. After a quick steam (I didn’t think this existed in Marbella) I got a very thorough extraction, and as I suffer from very bad pigmentation (yes, yes too much sunbathing, I know), those areas were treated with microdermabrasion. My favourite part was The Electronic Recuperator. Its vasodilator effect activates blood flow in the treated area, nourishing and revitalising the skin cells. Results are radiant, firm and healthy skin. I found the mixture of heat massaging in the product deeply relaxing. Finally I was covered in a mask, moisturised and ‘finito’ One word, amazing! The butterfly had emerged from the cocoon.

I have suffered from problem skin for most of my life, and have been treated by some of London’s top therapists, but I can safely say my skin has never looked this good. I left with a spring in my step, a glowing complexion, a mountain of nutritional advice and I received compliments for days, what more could you want?
